SVO word order
The default word order, and where adverbials go.
S + V + O (+ Adverbial of time/place)
In a statement, word order is fixed: Subject + Verb + Object. Frequency adverbs (always, often, never) go before the main verb, and time expressions go at the start or end of the sentence, not between the verb and the object.
Examples
- We confirmed the rate yesterday.
- She always checks the BOL before dispatch.
- Tomorrow we will send the invoice.
I very like this plan.
I like this plan very much.
The adverb very much cannot stand before the verb; it moves to the end.
Common mistakes
- A time expression wedged between verb and object: We confirmed yesterday the rate → We confirmed the rate yesterday.
- A frequency adverb placed after the verb: She checks always the BOL → She always checks the BOL.
