Question word order

Inversion in questions, and where the Wh-word sits.

Wh-word + Aux/Modal + S + V (+ O)

In yes/no questions, the auxiliary or modal moves before the subject: Aux/Modal + S + V. In wh-questions, the question word comes before that construction.

Examples

  • Do you have the updated rate sheet?
  • Have you seen the signed BOL?
  • Can she confirm the pickup window?
  • You have seen it?

    Have you seen it?

In a question the auxiliary have moves to first position: Have you seen.

Common mistakes

  • A question without inversion, relying on intonation in writing: You have seen it? → Have you seen it?
  • Adding do where a modal already carries the question: Do you can drive? → Can you drive?
