Negation
Saying no with not, and when do-support is needed.
S + Aux/Modal + not + V | S + don't/doesn't/didn't + V1
The particle not is added right after the auxiliary or modal verb. In Present Simple and Past Simple without another auxiliary, do-support is used: do/does/did + not + V1.
Examples
- I don't like this rate.
- She hasn't sent the POD yet.
- We can't confirm the slot today.
I not like it.
I don't like it.
Present Simple without a modal or other auxiliary needs do-support: don't like.
Common mistakes
- not placed right after the subject with no auxiliary: I not like it → I don't like it.
- Double negatives: I don't have no invoice → I don't have an invoice / I have no invoice.
