Definite article the

A thing both sides already have in mind.

the + noun (known / unique / repeated mention / superlative)

the is used when the thing is already known from context, is unique, is mentioned again, or appears with a superlative (the best, the only, etc.).

Examples

  • The best way is to book the carrier early.
  • We finally reached the port.
  • I sent an invoice; the invoice is attached.

  • Best way is to book early.

    The best way is to book early.

    A superlative requires the definite article: the best way.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the before a superlative: Best way is… → The best way is…
  • Missing the on a repeated mention of something already known: I sent an invoice; invoice is attached → the invoice is attached.
